Drones, virtual reality, and modeling: communicating catastrophic dam failure

Dam failures occur worldwide and can be economically ecologically devastating. Communicating the scale of these risks to general public decision-makers is imperative. Two-dimensional (2D) dam failure hydraulic models inform owners floodplain managers flood regimes but have limitations when shared with non-specialists. This study addresses by constructing a 3D Virtual Reality (VR) environment display 1976 Teton disaster case using pipeline composed (1) 2D model data (extrapolated into 3D), (2) reconstructed dam, (3) terrain processed from UAS (Uncrewed Airborne System) imagery Structure Motion photogrammetry. validates VR on Oculus Quest 2 Headset criteria: immersion fidelity, movement, immersive soundscape, agreement historical observations terrain.
